Final communiqué — Introduction
The 16th Ordinary General Assembly of the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) was held from 18 to 20 June 2025 at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire conference centre in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The general theme was: “Developing African media: what strategies for financial and technological resilience and innovative content?” Around one hundred participants from about forty countries took part, representing AUB members, sister unions, partners, observers and media organisations.
The programme included messages from sister unions, the admission of new members, four thematic panels, presentations by AUB partners, 2024 activity reports, presentation of AUB projects for 2025, an excursion and the AUB Awards evening. An ordinary session of the AUB Executive Council was also held on 18 June 2025.
Opening ceremony
The opening was chaired by Côte d’Ivoire’s Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé, in the presence of members of the host government and representatives from Botswana, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
RTI Director General Jean-Martial Adou welcomed participants on behalf of the host broadcaster. AUB Executive Council President Cleophas Barore highlighted the need for resilience and innovation in African media.
Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Communication and Government Spokesperson Ahmadou Coulibaly said Africa must innovate and take ownership of its own narratives, while reaffirming Côte d’Ivoire’s readiness to share its experience with other African countries.
The Prime Minister officially opened the General Assembly, expressing the hope that its outcomes would respond to the major challenges facing the development of audiovisual media in Africa.
