The African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) has launched a new project dedicated to addressing gender-based violence in Africa, with particular emphasis on femicide.

The initiative comes amid figures described by the Union as deeply concerning. A 2024 report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime stated that a woman is killed every ten minutes worldwide. In 2023, more than 50,000 women and girls were killed by intimate partners or family members globally, including 21,700 deaths in Africa. The continent also recorded the highest estimated rate, at 2.9 victims per 100,000 women.

AUB calls for collective action

As part of the project, AUB launched a questionnaire to collect data and perspectives from stakeholders and the public. The survey was intended to help inform and strengthen future initiatives addressing femicide and gender-based violence across Africa.

The initiative forms part of AUB’s broader effort to use media, research and professional engagement to support prevention and public awareness.
