The African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) is organizing its 3rd training session dedicated to combating male cancers on May 14, 2025. The online session will commence at 11:00 a.m. GMT and will be led by Dr. Maalej Sonia, a pulmonologist and lecturer at the University of Tunis.

The training will also feature a storytelling session by Joel Thuto, an accomplished broadcasting and media management professional with extensive strategic leadership and international experience.
With a Bachelor of Science in Communications from Indiana State University, specializing in Broadcasting (TV, Radio & Film), Joel has honed his expertise in broadcast system administration, strategic communication, and visionary management.
Throughout his career, Joel has held various key positions at Botswana Television (Btv), where he currently serves as the General Manager. Under his leadership, two new Btv national channels were established, signal distribution contracts were successfully negotiated, and broadcasting policies were implemented to optimize asset utilization. His prior roles at Btv included Chief Broadcasting Officer, Operations Manager, and Broadcasting Officer, where he oversaw digital storage, content workflow, media coverage, and international project coordination.
Joel’s influence extends beyond Botswana’s borders, marked by significant international exposure. He is the Secretary of the Training & Technology Commission for the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB). His global engagements include training and seminars across Canada, South Africa, Algeria, France, Japan, Sweden, the UK, and the USA, covering topics from digital broadcasting techniques to media management and brand communication.
In addition to his professional roles, Joel is a Board Member of the National Arts Council of Botswana and a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, reflecting his commitment to artistic development and academic excellence.
In 2023, Joel was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Fortunately, it was detected early, allowing him to receive timely medical attention. Now a survivor, Joel is committed to sharing his experience and advocating for the importance of media in informing and educating the public about health awareness. He firmly believes in the motto, “Your health is your wealth.”
Joel Thuto remains dedicated to advancing media innovation, strategic leadership, and impactful broadcasting within Botswana and beyond, while using his platform to inspire health consciousness and proactive medical attention.
