At the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva, AUB called for a fundamental shift in how media are integrated into disaster preparedness.

During a session on the critical role of media in strengthening warnings and preparedness, AUB Director General Grégoire Ndjaka argued that media should no longer be treated merely as observers reporting the consequences of disasters, but as essential actors and first responders integrated into risk-reduction systems.

Onengiye Fyneface of AUB’s Anglophone Desk highlighted the role of African media in building trust, providing access to local information and developing partnerships with meteorological and emergency services through regular briefings and joint simulations.

Participants also stressed stronger cooperation between journalists and the scientific community so that technical warnings can be translated into clear, understandable messages that prompt life-saving action.
