Africa’s broadcasting heavyweights gathered in Banjul as the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) officially opened its General Assembly on 16 April, 2026 setting the stage for high-level conversations on media transformation, press freedom, and the future of public broadcasting across the continent. Delivering the keynote, Gambia’s Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting, Ismaila Ceesay, challenged African media institutions to rise beyond traditional roles and become active drivers of democracy, accountability, and development. He emphasized that in an era of misinformation and digital disruption, credible broadcasting is more critical than ever. AUB President, Cleophas Barore, struck a unifying tone, calling for stronger collaboration among African broadcasters. He underscored the need for innovation, content sharing, and investment in technology to ensure African stories are told by Africans, for Africans, and the world. The Director General of the Gambia Radio and Television Service (GRTS), Abdoulie Sey, welcomed delegates with a message centered on national pride and regional solidarity. He highlighted The Gambia’s commitment to strengthening public broadcasting as a pillar for national development and cultural preservation. Adding strategic direction to the discussions, the AUB Director General, Mr. Gregoire Ndjaka outlined the organization’s vision for a more resilient and adaptive broadcasting sector. He stressed the urgency of embracing digital transformation, capacity building, and policy reforms to keep pace with global media trends. As the Assembly continues, expectations are high for concrete resolutions that will shape the future of broadcasting on the continent, from policy reforms to technological upgrades and strengthened regional cooperation.
