Extended session with participants from Niger (screenshot) In order to ensure a comprehensive and balanced training for the benefit of its members, the AUB has been organizing since last week, extended trainings on the role of the media in the prevention and management of natural disasters. The trainings which kicked-off in January 2021, are organized in partnership with the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction- UNDRR, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). This series aims at engaging and educating broadcasters and other communication stakeholders in their requirements and obligations to address climate and environmental issues, highlighting the relationship between events, communicators and audiences as the world attempts to deal with an increasing number of natural events and disasters. In view of the sanitary conditions prevalent in the world, the workshops will initially take place online, with the possibility of physical meetings, depending on the evolution of the Covid19 pandemic. https://covid19.who.int/ The Programme targets: 1. AUB Member Organizations and other African Media Professionnals who wish to increase their awareness of current environmental issues and improve their communication skills within this ever growing field 2. NGO’s & other stakeholders, DRR initiatives, Developing projects and plans / Programme and Project Surgery. Natural disasters are major events adverse event resulting from natural processes of the earth such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes; tsunamis, storms and other geologic processes. A natural disaster can cause loss of life or damage property, and typically leaves some economic damage in its wake, the severity of which depends on the affected population’s resilience and on the infrastructure available.
