The African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) is organising the first regional capacity-building workshop for journalists from Lake Chad Basin countries from 27 to 29 July 2026 in N’Djamena, Chad. The event focuses on reporting climate change and disaster-risk reduction in contexts of conflict and fragility.
Organised in partnership with UNESCO and under the joint patronage of Chad’s ministries responsible for communication and for environment and sustainable development, the workshop follows an online training phase completed earlier in 2026. Media professionals from Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon are taking part.
The programme promotes cross-border collaboration through the co-production of climate and disaster-risk stories and the development of institutional disaster preparedness and response plans by participating media organisations.
Across Africa, droughts, floods, coastal erosion and desertification are worsening existing vulnerabilities and can intensify competition over natural resources, displacement and food insecurity. In fragile settings where communications infrastructure may be damaged and populations highly exposed, the media play a critical role in providing timely, credible information, from early warnings to prevention measures.
The three-day workshop includes practical sessions on real-time disaster reporting, contributions from climate and crisis-management experts and case studies designed to strengthen responsible reporting and reduce the risks of misinformation.
