Former CAF president and FIFA interim leader leaves enduring legacy.
Issa Hayatou, born on August 9, 1946, in Garoua, Cameroon, passed away on August 8, 2024, in Paris.
A revered sports executive, athlete, and football administrator, Hayatou is best known for his 29-year tenure as president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) from 1988 to 2017.
He also served as interim FIFA president from October 2015 to February 2016 following the suspension of Sepp Blatter. Hayatou’s leadership was instrumental in the growth of African football, marked by increased participation in FIFA World Cups, the expansion of the African Cup of Nations, and the development of club competitions.
Beyond football, Hayatou was a member of the International Olympic Committee. His legacy as a visionary leader who shaped the trajectory of African sports is undeniable.
