The African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) has successfully concluded a high-impact Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Training Programme for African Journalists, delivered on behalf of UNESCO. The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance professional standards in journalism and strengthen the role of media in advancing development across the continent.
The training, which was conducted virtually, lasted from 11 to 22 August, 2025 and was facilitated by seasoned media experts and trainers including Gisele Nnemi Nga, Editor-in-Chief at the AUB and Onengiyeofori Fyneface, Head of English Desk at the AUB.
Introduction to media and information literacy
Understanding and combating information disorder in the digital age
Tools for digital fact-checking and information verification
Responsible use of digital tools for impactful and ethical storytelling
Strengthening and rebuilding public trust through accurate, inclusive, and development-oriented reporting
Promoting resilience and sustainability in media coverage of pressing global challenges, including climate change and disasters
Ethical considerations in broadcast and social media content production
Developing institutional Media and Information Literacy Policy to include MIL into the programming of participating organizations
This training reaffirms the commitment of the leadership of AUB to empower African media professionals with cutting-edge knowledge and skills and support them through strategic partnerships to develop guidelines to integrate media and information literacy skills in their programmes.
The AUB takes pride in championing this important UNESCO-supported training programme by equipping journalists with Media and Information Literacy skills as an investment in stronger democracies, more resilient communities, and a credible media landscape in Africa.
The online session will be followed by a period of mentorship when participants will be guided through the development of a MIL Policy for their organizations ahead of an in-person conference in Mauritius Island in October, 2025.
