The African Union of Broadcasting (AUB), in partnership with UNESCO, is stepping up efforts to strengthen climate journalism and disaster reporting across Africa through a new media capacity-building initiative focused on the Lake Chad Basin. The programme, titled Strengthening Media Capacity for Climate Change and Disaster Reporting in Violence, Fragility and Conflict Contexts, is designed to equip journalists and broadcasters with the skills needed to report accurately and responsibly on climate change, disasters, and humanitarian crises in some of Africa’s most vulnerable regions. Climate change continues to deepen challenges across the continent, from devastating floods and prolonged droughts to desertification, displacement, and growing pressure on food systems. In conflict-affected areas, access to reliable information is often limited, making the role of the media even more critical. Through this partnership, the AUB is providing a platform for journalists to improve their understanding of climate risks, disaster risk reduction, and crisis communication, while also strengthening the fight against misinformation and disinformation during emergencies. The initiative will bring together media professionals from four Lake Chad Basin countries, including Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger. A major component of the programme is a series of online training sessions that will be held in both English and French to ensure wider regional participation. By leading this initiative, the AUB continues to reinforce its commitment to empowering African broadcasters with the knowledge and tools needed to deliver impactful public interest journalism on climate change and disasters.
