African Union Commissioner Josefa Correia Sacko told COP29 in Baku that climate change threatens African economies and risks reversing hard-won development gains.
She presented the African Union’s climate-change and resilient-development strategy as a framework for adaptation, low-emission transformation, green growth and stronger continental cooperation. The approach is aligned with Agenda 2063, the Sustainable Development Goals, the Sendai Framework and global biodiversity commitments.
The strategy seeks to leverage Africa’s renewable-energy resources, nature-based solutions, transformative industrial pathways and green and circular economy opportunities. The AU has also established a climate-finance unit to mobilise resources for member states and multi-country programmes.
Sacko called for stronger institutions and improved governance so that national climate commitments can be converted into concrete sustainable-development outcomes.
