A specialised online training programme organised by UNESCO in cooperation with the African Union of Broadcasting began on 28 July 2025 for French-speaking journalists from African Small Island Developing States.
The three-day course aims to strengthen the ability of African media to report accurately and responsibly on climate change and disaster risks, particularly in island states highly exposed to cyclones, floods and sea-level rise.
The programme covers climate science, disaster-risk reduction, solutions journalism, combating misinformation, the use of artificial intelligence in climate reporting and gender-sensitive environmental coverage.
Participants also enter a practical phase after the training, producing field-based stories and collaborative reports focused on local realities, solutions and good practices.
The initiative reflects UNESCO and AUB’s commitment to strengthening environmental journalism, linguistic diversity and equal access to professional development across African media.
