PRESS RELEASE – 17th General Assembly of the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) and the Union’s 20th anniversary, 14–17 April 2026 in Banjul, The Gambia.
Dakar, Senegal, 21 January 2026 – The 17th General Assembly of the African Union of Broadcasting, which this year coincides with the celebration of its 20th anniversary, will take place from 14 to 17 April 2026 in Banjul, The Gambia, under the theme: “AUB, 20 years serving African media: heritage, innovation and transformation.” The gathering will provide a strategic reflection on the present and future of Africa’s media ecosystem.
Against a global backdrop of rapid technological change, evolving audience habits and growing challenges for public and private media, AUB considers it essential to create a space for dialogue that highlights the legacy of African broadcasters, encourages innovation and supports the institutional transformation needed to meet the demands of the 21st century.
The high-level meeting will bring together media directors-general, broadcasting industry representatives, television executives, government authorities, sports confederations, experts, academics, content creators from across Africa and beyond, as well as representatives of sister unions, partners and other strategic stakeholders.
The General Assembly will examine key issues shaping the future of African broadcasting, including the assessment of AUB’s 20 years of activity, the high cost of sports rights, new sources of financing for media organisations, and technological innovation and transformation across African media.
The Assembly will culminate in the AUB MEDIA AWARDS gala, a major continental event celebrating both the Union’s 20th anniversary and excellence and creativity in the audiovisual sector. The gala will also include a fundraising initiative in support of the AFAC Foundation, dedicated to fighting cancer through the media.
With 85 members, the African Union of Broadcasting is the largest broadcasting media organisation in Africa. It brings together public and private broadcasters from Africa and beyond. Its mission is to develop all segments of the television and radio industry on the continent. AUB actively promotes authentic African content through its distribution platform AUBVision and its wider digital network.
